Bio

Hanna Nielson is a writer-actor-filmmaker and freelance editor/artist based in Belfast. She works with authors, self-published writers, small presses, and journals in Northern Ireland and beyond. Currently she is Editor-in-Chief and Founder of The Belfast Review and Uí Néill Press. Her fiction, essays, poetry, artwork can be found in Martello Journal, The Honest Ulsterman, Ogham Stone, and more. Her writing on feminism and BAME inclusion in media can be found in Ms in the Biz and Pasadena Weekly.  Her literary magic realism novel, Did You Pay the Piper Man? (Uí Néill Press, 2025) is now available at all major retailers.

As a documentary filmmaker, she holds several film festival awards and her screenplays have placed highly in contests, including Sundance Screenwriters Lab. She holds a MA in Creative Writing from University of Leeds, and a BA in Cinema and Comparative Literature from University of Iowa, where she also studied at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and Iowa Playwrights’ Workshop.

With 15+ years experience across filmmaking, art, and publishing, in the US, Ireland, and UK, Hanna Nielson has worked with clients in entertainment, music, journalism, non-profits, government, advertising, and major league sports.​ As a publishing consultant and mentor, she collaborates with small presses, journals, and authors based on the Island of Ireland and beyond. She offers a curated selection of professional services for discerning clients.
